Prince Harry Says He ‘Would Love Reconciliation’ With the Royal Family — Here’s Why

Prince Harry recently spoke out about his ongoing dispute with the royal family, his lost court case over police protection, and his hope for a future reconciliation.

In an interview with BBC News uploaded on May 2, 2025, the Duke of Sussex said he is currently unable to return to the United Kingdom with his wife and children. He explained that their police protection was downgraded after he stepped back from royal duties in 2020.

A recent court decision upheld that change, leaving him without the level of security he believes is necessary. “So yeah, for the time being, it’s impossible for me to take my family back to the UK safely,” Harry said. He currently lives in California with Meghan Markle and their two children.

Harry had challenged the security downgrade in court. He argued that he was treated unfairly and that the decision put his family at risk. The Court of Appeal rejected his appeal. “But obviously, pretty gutted about the decision,” he said.

Harry also said the legal dispute has worsened his relationship with his father. “He won’t speak to me because of this security stuff,” he said. Despite that, he said he wants to repair those ties.

“I would love reconciliation with my family.[..] There’s no point in continuing to fight anymore,” he said. “As I said, life is precious. Um, I don’t know how much longer my father has. Um, you know, he won’t speak to me because of this security stuff. But it would be nice to reconcile.”

Harry also spoke about his experience with First Nations communities in Canada through the Invictus Games. He said the idea of “truth and reconciliation” influenced how he now sees his own family situation. “And I turned around to them in many conversations—I said, ‘Right, but reconciliation can’t come without truth,'” he shared.

“Well, I’ve now found out the truth. Um, I’ve shared some of it with you today. A lot of it exists out there, whether people choose to ignore it or not,” he continued. “You know, so it would be nice to have that reconciliation part now. Um, if they don’t want that, that’s entirely up to them.”

Prince Harry has discussed his family publicly many times since stepping back from royal duties. In this latest interview, he said again that he is open to reconciliation—but only if his family is willing too.
